About Rothaargebirge Nature Park

Rothaargebirge Nature Park, spanning parts of North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse, encompasses the scenic Rothaar Mountains, a Mittelgebirge or low mountain range in central Germany. Established in 1960, the park covers nearly 2,000 square kilometers of largely forested landscapes characterized by mixed beech and spruce woodlands, moorlands, and river valleys. The area is ecologically important, sheltering diverse wildlife such as red deer, wildcats, and rare bird species, alongside several protected plant communities and raised bog habitats. Historically shaped by forestry and mining activities, today the park is heavily focused on sustainable outdoor recreation and environmental education. Visitors explore over 4,000 kilometers of marked trails winding through panoramic viewpoints, pristine rivers, and cultural landmarks. Key highlights include the Kahler Asten, one of the highest peaks at 841 meters, offering expansive views and a popular winter sports area. The Naturpark itself integrates with the Rothaarsteig, a long-distance hiking trail stretching about 154 km, often cited as one of Germany’s top hikes. Besides hiking and mountain biking, visitors enjoy cross-country skiing, wildlife watching, and fishing in the numerous streams and reservoirs. The park’s remote spots and well-maintained pathways attract nature lovers and adventure seekers, while visitor centers provide informative exhibits and guided tours. The Rothaargebirge Nature Park represents a harmonious blend of natural beauty, outdoor activity, and conservation efforts within Germany’s Mittelgebirge region.
