Rothaargebirge Nature Park Adventures

Rothaargebirge Nature Park, spanning parts of North Rhine-Westphalia and Hesse, encompasses the scenic Rothaar Mountains, a Mittelgebirge or low mountain range in central Germany. Established in 1960, the park covers nearly 2,000 square kilometers of largely forested landscapes characterized by mixed beech and spruce woodlands, moorlands, and river valleys. The area is ecologically important, sheltering diverse wildlife such as red deer, wildcats, and rare bird species, alongside several protected plant communities and raised bog habitats. The Naturpark itself integrates with the Rothaarsteig, a long-distance hiking trail stretching about 154 km, often cited as one of Germany’s top hikes. Besides hiking and mountain biking, visitors enjoy cross-country skiing, wildlife watching, and fishing in the numerous streams and reservoirs.
